September 25th

After a day of lying on the couch and a day of walking slowly around the house, we needed to get out. Luckily, there are lots of nice, close, easy places to get out to around here. We went to Apple Hill Saturday morning. It was warm and more crowded than we expected, but not overwhelming. Mike and I enjoyed some treats--neither of the kids wanted anything, a true testament to how sick they have been feeling. They preferred plain bread and water. The big highlight for Sylvie was her first pony ride. She was a little nervous, but she loves animals so much that she got over it as soon as I held her hand. She said "pony" the whole time we were walking around, although it didn't SOUND like pony at all. She was very upset when I got her off and she realized we were leaving.

Holding bear (who she was insisting was a kitty) all ready to go:
I get a lot of comments on her looks these days. At Boa Vista Mike heard one lady stop her companion and say "Isn't she beautiful?" I concur.

Lucky the pony. I have a feeling we will be back.

September 23

What sick looks like at our house:(I know, pretty precious for feeling lousy.)

Lots of naps and lots of tv. That is what we've been saving it for, right?

We had a rough week. All of us had some sort of flu virus on Wednesday and Thursday. Sylvie has been up and down all week, but has maintained a generally cheery disposition. She still isn't well--not eating or processing the little she is eating. Luckily she has some decent padding, and she seems to be staying hydrated, so we aren't too concerned about her yet. Jens missed a couple of days of school and tonight when I put him to bed (Sunday) he was running a fever. Ack! I am ready for him to go back to school! Hopefully we will have an overnight miracle and he will wake up feeling great. Cross your fingers for us.

September 21st

I got to go into Jens's classroom on Wednesday to talk about art and music with the kids. It was really fun. We talked about American Gothic and Hoedown from Rodeo. The kids even tried out some dance moves. Then they did a little art project--making a little "quilt." I loved seeing Jens in the classroom setting. I swear, he is the smartest one in there. And I am not biased at all!

September 18th A recent rundown/our Saturday

We have been keeping busy around here. Music makers is back in full swing, which Sylvie seems to be enjoying. She loves the dancing part especially. Last week during spotlight songs she hustled her way up there and said "My turn!" Then she wanted EVERY turn to be her turn. Hopefully she will learn about being an audience member soon. I am also loving the one on one time with her each morning. She is a little sponge right now--she is learning colors and shapes these days. She talks all the time, but it is still really hard to understand her.

We also went bike shopping this week and I tried out some really fun bikes. I think I am settled on a Felt Z5. It is a pretty serious jump up from my little fitness bike, but I am excited to get it and start riding around.

We signed our refinance this week as well. We still have a few papers to drop off, but it is nice to know the big stuff is done.

Work in the bathroom is progressing. I am trying to choose a paint color, and you all know how long that can take!

Jens is still loving school. The structure seems to be very good for him. He is learning a lot and comes home singing new songs and telling me about stories and things they are learning, like patterns. We have also been practicing reading, which is fun for me.

Jens also had his 5 year check up recently. He is 42.5 inches tall (50%) and weighs 44 pounds (60%). He is doing great developmentally and was able to answer almost all of the doctor's questions, except for the fire department's phone number. We have been practicing 911 since then.

Saturday we had a big day. It seemed like we were coming and going all day long. I think Mike and I saw each other for about 15 minutes during the course of the day. It started out with a run for Mike (13.6 miles) and friends coming over for the kids. Then Mike came home and I ran to the farmers market, which is just amazing right now. Peaches, grapes, sweet corn, tomatoes, green beans, lettuce--oh my! I have a hard time restraining myself, but it has become my main shopping venue these days, so it is okay to get carried away. Then I met Mike at Jens's soccer game. This game was fun because it seemed like the boys sort of figured out what to do. They weren't quite so bunched up (although there was still plenty of that) and they managed to score! Jens got a goal--he did a great job of running up to the ball and kicking it hard in the right direction. He was pretty proud. I wish I had a picture, but I missed his actual kick and only looked in time to see the ball roll across the line and Jens with a super cute look on his face.

I took Sylvie home shortly afterwords for lunch. After lunch, Mike and JP went to get a stump grinder. Our yard is stumpy no more!
Mike spent the remainder of the afternoon and evening helping JP at his house, and I headed out to do something about our rock pile. Hopefully I will be finished soon and have an exciting picture to post of the after.

September 16th More Stitches

We had a return to the ER this week. After soccer practice Jens was showering and decided he needed the wash cloth hanging over the curtain rod, and to get it he was going to stand on the edge of the tub. As you can imagine, it was very slippery and resulted in a spectacular crash and a split in his chin. He was pretty brave about it all, aside from the hysterical shrieking. When he got home from the hospital at 10:00, we all sat down and had some ice cream. I hope he doesn't make this a yearly occurrence.

September 13th Tickle Tickle!

September 13th

This morning Mike woke with a jump realizing that Jens was downstairs rummaging around in the pantry, as he is wont to do. Mike ran down the steps to find:

The table set with two bowls, two spoons, and Cheerios poured. Milk out and ready, and Jens with a big smile. Also, while he was waiting for Mike to come down, he'd packed himself a snack to take to school--he'd washed some strawberries, gotten out an applesauce, and picked out a granola bar.

What a happy start to the day.

September 11th Kung-Foo Fighters

The soccer season has progressed to games! Saturday was the Kung-Foo Fighters' first game, and while they did not exactly win, they had a great time. Jens ran and ran and complained every time he got taken out for a break. He had a couple of good runs down the field and got a few good kicks in. He even took a "shot," but as it was from just a little past mid-field and he stepped on the ball first, it didn't go in. It gently rolled into the goalie's arms instead.

Sylvie was sort of a crank, but the rest of us really enjoyed the morning. Maybe next time the Kung-Foo Fighters will score a goal.

September 7th

Jens: "I have an owie on my foot, so I can't do PE. But I still look handsome."

When Mike left for work yesterday, Sylvie said "hugs!" and after he gave her a hug she said "Time!" As in, "Have a good time." Which is what Jens always tells us whenever we go anywhere without him.

Sylvie's dog:
Gets to drink out of her cup first in the morning.
Needs to ride in the shopping cart with her, buckled if possible.
Eats Cheerios out of her bowl.
Gets hugs and kisses from Mom and Dad regularly at Sylvie's command.
Gets sleepy and needs to be wrapped in her blanket. When wrapped, he needs one paw out so he can rub the silky part.
Needed his hand held by Mom AND Sylvie when we walked up to the park.

September 6th Labor Day

We spent Labor Day at Camp Nauvoo after a peaceful morning swim. We picked up Subway and got there in time for lunch. Jens put on his swimming suit immediately afterwords and wore it, along with his life jacket, the rest of the day. There is a little stream that is dammed up with several rafts and long poles for maneuvering around.

There were lots of kids, tadpoles, ladybugs, and a lot of cookies. It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed sitting around and visiting with our friends. We came home very dirty and the kids were worn out. It was a nice day off!

I got a little carried away this week, but everything just looked so good.

September 4th Tahoe

We spent a lovely afternoon at Tahoe with friends. The word "hike" was mentioned, but no action was every taken on that front. Instead we sat on the beach and admired the view while the kids played in the sand.

We did have one heart stopping experience in which Sylvie went into the lake unaccompanied. Mike went in, shoes, compression socks, and all to fish her out.

September 4th Stretch

Sylvie likes to join in Mike's post run stretch. She can touch her own toes and

she can touch Mike's.

September 3 Dirty

Since school started we have been having lots of play dates with our friend, Nathanael, who lives a few blocks away and with whom we carpool to and from school. They generally end with both boys looking about like this, dirty, muddy, and wet. At least this time I had the foresight to have them put on swimming trunks and take off their shoes so they weren't ruining their clothes.

And yes, that is a huge mud puddle they are landing in. They ripped out the grass by the roots and filled up the hole with water from the hose. Ack.

August 31 Soccer Practice

Soccer practice has been going for a few weeks now. Jens still wants to wear his uniform for every practice. He is doing fine and is actually a pretty good dribbler, but he isn't aggressive (surprise!) and is content to run along next to someone who has the ball rather than actually try to take the ball from the other person.

I have to say, we are generally finding soccer to be an inconvenience. Practices are twice a week, and although Jens likes it while he is there, he doesn't love it. It starts at 6:15, which makes dinner tricky. Games start on the 11th. We will see how that goes.

August 29th Cheese Tasting

We have been reading a lot of the aforementioned Anatole, in which a mouse tastes cheese and gives the cheese makers advice on how to improve in hopes of earning an honest living rather than being a villainous mouse. Jens was excited by this idea and made his own little signs. One says "No gut" and the other one says something along the lines of "extra 'specially good." As he only made two signs and we only had two kinds of cheese, things worked out well.

August 28th Sweet Moment

Miracle of miracles, our kids sometimes play together these days. This morning they were reading together and laughing about Anatole, the French mouse. I really do try to treasure these moments.

PS--do we have awesome hair at this house or what?
PS2--I was just looking at this picture thinking about how much they look alike. Same soft skin, same hair color, same long lashes. They are so gorgeous I could eat them up.

Dad: We are all winners.
Jens: No. I am better.

August 27th Dance Break

We get a lot of amazing dance moves around here. Sometimes this girl just likes to boogie. She was actually dancing without music, so I turned the radio on for her.

August 28th

I am not feeling so good. Just a crummy cold, but it is enough to make me really tired. This morning was a good time to watch a movie since (miracle of miracles) our tv finally got fixed after two weeks. Sylvie shrieked like a preteen seeing Justin Beiber as soon as the cow from Baby Einstein's Old MacDonald flashed onto the screen. It was a peaceful 30 minutes.

August 25th Coloring

Sylvie is starting to like coloring, which is no surprise, really, as it is her brother's favorite activity in the whole world, and she tends to like to do things like him.

August 25th Triathlon

Mike and I have been talking all summer about doing a triathlon together. We have been swimming, biking, and running to get ready. It seemed like a fun way to celebrate 10 years of doing fun things together, and neither of us have ever done one before. We decided to do a small race in Folsom that is run pretty regularly all summer to give people a chance to practice for big races. We eyed up a couple of different dates which slowly slipped by, and suddenly there was only one left in August. We got a sitter, and even though temperatures hit 108 on Wednesday, we went anyway. It was definitely a learning experience! We both really enjoyed it, although the swimming section in particular was much more difficult than we had anticipated. Open water and 60 degree water made conditions very different from the pool at the gym. But we both completed the 1/2 mile swim and stuck together for the rest of the race, a 12 mile bike and a 2 mile run for me--Mike ran one more loop and did three miles. I finished in 1:35:17 and Mike finished about 8 minutes after that.

We both had a good time and we would both like to try it again. Maybe in warmer water, though.
